My first Dropshipping failure

Why My First Dropshipping Idea Failed Miserably (And the £50 I Lost)

You’ve seen the YouTube videos. The slick gurus leaning against rented Lamborghinis, telling you that dropshipping is the easiest way to make thousands a month with no inventory and almost no risk.

I bought into the hype. I was convinced this was my ticket to a successful side hustle.

Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. My first attempt at a dropshipping business was a complete and utter failure. I made exactly zero sales and ended up £50 out of pocket.

This isn’t a story of success. This is a refreshingly honest look at the mistakes I made, the lessons I learned, and the reality of dropshipping that the gurus don’t tell you. If you’re thinking of starting, this is the cautionary tale you need to read first.

Mistake #1: I Chose a “Passion Product,” Not a “Problem-Solving Product”

My first mistake was the biggest. I decided to sell… custom-designed phone cases with artistic, abstract patterns. Why? Because I thought they looked cool. I was passionate about the design, not the business.

The hard lesson: Nobody wakes up in the morning desperately needing a new, artistic phone case. It’s a “nice-to-have,” not a “must-have.” Successful dropshipping products almost always solve a specific, painful problem. Think posture correctors, pet hair removers, or kitchen gadgets that save time. I was trying to sell art; I should have been selling a solution.

Mistake #2: I Ignored the “Hidden” Start-Up Costs

The big lie of dropshipping is that it’s “free to start.” It’s not. While you don’t buy inventory upfront, there are still costs.

  • Shopify Plan: My basic plan cost around £25 for the first month.
  • Domain Name: A custom .co.uk domain was about £10 for the year.
  • Sample Product: I ordered one of my own phone cases to check the quality. That was another £15.

Just like that, I was £50 in the hole before I’d even made a single sale. This doesn’t even include the biggest cost of all…

Mistake #3: I Had a Marketing Budget of £0

This was the nail in the coffin. I built my shiny new Shopify store, designed my products, and waited for the sales to roll in. Of course, they didn’t.

The hard lesson: You can have the best product in the world, but if nobody knows your store exists, you will make zero sales. Dropshipping is not a product business; it’s a marketing and advertising business.

Successful dropshippers spend hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds on Facebook Ads, TikTok Ads, and influencer marketing just to find a winning product and get traffic to their store. I had assumed that people would just magically find me through Google. They didn’t. My marketing budget was £0, and my sales reflected that perfectly.

The Verdict: Was it a Waste of Money?

Losing £50 with nothing to show for it stings. But was it a waste? Absolutely not.

That £50 was the price of a powerful education. I learned that:

  • A successful business solves a problem, it doesn’t just sell a passion.
  • There’s no such thing as a “free” business; you have to be prepared to invest.
  • Marketing is everything. A mediocre product with great marketing will always beat a great product with no marketing.

I may have failed, but I’m not defeated. I’m taking these lessons and channeling them into my next, much smarter, side hustle attempt. And that’s a story I’ll be sharing with you soon.
